Here is a little Halloween trickery: this “Black Russian” is really a White Russian wearing a costume. A pinch of black edible glitter turns the creamy drink a swirling, stormy gray-black. Ingredients Method Why it works This is the creamy pattern: spirit plus liqueur plus cream. Vodka adds strength without flavor, the coffee liqueur brings…
The classic Lemon Drop gets dressed for Halloween with a black sugar rim and a shimmer of black glitter. Sweet, tart, and a little bit sinister. Ingredients Method Why it works This is a textbook sour: spirit, citrus, and sweetener. Citron vodka doubles down on the lemon flavor, and the sugar rim gives every sip…
Same family as the Lemon Drop, different personality. Berry and orange liqueurs take over part of the sweetening, adding fruit, color, and a little more depth. Ingredients Method Why it works It is still a sour, but notice the lemon went up from 1/2 oz to 3/4 oz. That is because the liqueurs add sweetness…
A deep berry-red drink with a silver shimmer and a sparkling finish. Fruity enough to win over people who say they don’t like cocktails. Ingredients Method Why it works This is a sour turned into a fizz. The soda goes in last, after shaking, so the bubbles survive. Lemon keeps the liqueur and grenadine from…
A light green, sweet-tart drink garnished with “eyeballs” that stare right back at you. Guaranteed conversation starter. Ingredients Method Why it works Another sour, but with two liqueurs doing most of the sweetening. That is why it needs so much lime: 1 1/2 oz keeps the melon and lemon flavors bright instead of sugary. Swaps…
A tropical drink that wandered into a haunted house. Coconut and pineapple meet electric blue curaçao, with a dark berry swirl and an optional silver shimmer. Ingredients Method Why it works Coconut rum and blue curaçao are both sweet, so the lemon juice does important work keeping this from tasting like a snow cone. Blue…
A dark berry-and-rum drink with a white coconut “ghost” floating on top. It looks dramatic and is easier to make than it looks. Ingredients Method Why it works This is a built drink with a float. Coconut cream is lighter than the sugary spirits below it, so a slow pour lets it rest on top….
